Digital Systems & Data (V Level)

This V Level course lets you explore critical fields like data analysis, cyber security, and system configuration, using hands-on digital tools and scenarios to build a strong technical foundation for higher-level study or tech apprenticeships.

At Ada, the National College for Digital Skills, the Digital Systems & Data V Level gives you hands-on experience in a real-world, industry-focused environment. 

You’ll explore exciting tech fields, including data analysis to make sense of complex information, and cyber security to spot threats and protect systems from hackers. You’ll also learn about system configuration for setting up and testing IT networks, and digital solution design to create tools that meet specific user needs.

Being a very practical course, you’ll bring your own ideas to life, from figuring out exactly what a user needs to actually building the solution. Using up-to-date digital tools, you’ll build your technical abilities alongside core skills like problem-solving and logical thinking.

Best of all, you won’t just be sitting in a classroom. You’ll work directly with tech professionals from our industry partners, tackling real-life business challenges. This hands-on experience will give you the perfect stepping stone and the confidence to jump straight into a tech apprenticeship or head off to university.

What will I learn?

You’ll cover the main components of digital systems (hardware, software, network infrastructure, and data storage), the role of operating systems and ethical, legal, and sustainability considerations.

You’ll learn how to prepare, analyse, and present data to generate insights for decision-making.

You’ll also study common cyber security threats, such as phishing, malware, and ransomware, and learn how to apply security protocols and interpret system logs to detect and escalate concerns.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is structured with 100-140 guided learning hours dedicated to Core Knowledge and Understanding, and 220-260 guided learning hours allocated to applied knowledge and skills.

All students must complete the core components alongside two mandatory work-related purposes: data analysis (WRP1) and cyber security (WRP2).

You’ll then be assessed on one chosen optional pathway: either system configuration (WRP3) or digital solution design (WRP4).

How will I be taught?

Your teaching will focus heavily on applied activity and practical problem-solving. Learning materials and organisational scenarios used in class will be varied and inclusive, drawing on examples from a diverse range of sectors.

For technical tasks, you may be taught using realistic, controlled, non-live, or simulated digital environments to safely practice system configuration and fault-finding. You’ll also get hands-on experience using contemporary digital tools, including AI-enabled analytical systems, monitoring dashboards, and low-code or block-based development.
