Digital Games Production (BTEC)

This BTEC Level course lets you explore specialist fields like 3D modelling, animation, and games testing, using direct employer engagement and practical projects to build your technical skills for a specialist degree or an entry-level career in the games industry.

Why Study Digital Games Production at Ada?

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Digital Games Production provides a specialist technical foundation for one of the most exciting sectors in the UK economy. The UK games industry is a renowned major player in a massive global market, and the creative industries as a whole contribute £9.6 million an hour to the UK economy.

Equivalent in size to one A level (360 GLH), this course was developed in direct consultation with employers, higher education representatives, and professional bodies like the Creative Industries Federation and TIGA.

The course takes a highly practical approach. While taking this qualification, you’ll be required to engage with industry employers as part of your course, giving you the chance to develop real-world practical skills in preparation for employment. Whether you’re aiming for an entry-level role like a games tester or planning to progress to a specialist degree in Computer Games Art or Games Design Technology, this course will give you the technical competencies to succeed.

What will I learn?

The course is built around two mandatory core units: digital games production and digital media skills. Once you have established these fundamental skills, you’ll be able to personalise your pathway by adding three optional units from a choice of eight. These optional units introduce you to sector-specialist areas and technical roles, with choices covering animation, concept art, 3D modelling and environment, games engine scripting, and games testing.

How will I be assessed?

As a BTEC qualification consisting of 360 Guided Learning Hours, your assessment will cover both the mandatory components and your chosen optional units. You’ll be evaluated on your ability to apply technical knowledge and practical skills to scenarios that reflect authentic employment opportunities in the digital games sector.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught through a mix of theoretical study and practical employer engagement, giving you hands-on experience. Because you will study this course alongside other level 3 qualifications, your teaching is designed to complement your wider studies and support your progression into the creative and design route.
