Michael Keddie is an Associate Lecturer at Ada. He teaches a variety of technical modules, including SDLC, Digital Leadership, Cyber Analytics, and Penetration Testing, and is also involved in the T Levels for September 2026. We caught up with Michael to learn more about his background, his industry experience, and how he prepares apprentices for the fast-paced tech industry.
What is your academic background and pre-Ada industry experience?
I hold a BA (Hons) in Modern History from the University of Liverpool, a PGCE in History from Keele University, and an MSc with Distinction in Computer Science with Cyber Security from Wrexham University.
Before joining Ada, I worked in the industry as a Security Consultant and Academy Team Leader for Pentest People (which is now known as WorkNest Secure). After working hands-on as a Penetration Tester and Security Consultant, I established and ran the Pentest People’s Training Academy for two years.
How are you actively embedding modern tech tools into your modules this year?
I have introduced market-leading tools such as Splunk into my modules. Additionally, I am keeping a close eye on the fast-developing impact of AI on cyber security so that our curriculum remains highly relevant.
What is one specific skill or capability apprentices learn in your class that allows them to add value to their employer teams from day one?
From day one, I encourage my apprentices to communicate clearly, professionally, and confidently. Because of this, they quickly learn to ask thoughtful questions, translate complex technical concepts into plain English, and collaborate effectively with both their colleagues and clients.
Why did you choose to teach at Ada instead of staying purely in industry or traditional academia?
I was specifically drawn to Ada’s social mission. The opportunity to transform the lives of diverse young people was what ultimately brought me here.
Outside of data, code, or cyber, what is a hobby or interest you are passionate about?
I am passionate about running. I regularly take part in parkruns, marathons, and triathlons, and I have even competed in the World Coal Carrying Championship twice!
