In January, as part of her T Level course, Jasmine went for her first 3-week industry placement to Worldwide Technology (WWT). We spoke to her prior to her first ever work experience and she was really looking forward to moving from school-based homework to actual work conditions, and understanding the industry from a professional perspective. But she was also a bit shy and nervous about whether her current experience is sufficient for the requirements of the workplace.
When we caught up with Jasmine after her placement she was buzzing with excitement about the things she’d experienced at WWT! She loved the constant sense of challenge, the fact that the WWT employees treated her with respect and on a professional level, regardless of her age and that the culture was so inclusive, encouraging and friendly. And reflecting on her 3 weeks on the job, Jasmine identified three major lessons: communication is essential, imposter syndrome can be managed through self-motivation, and the importance of teamwork.
Talking to Jasmine post her placement was a rewarding experience as it brought to life the mission of Ada: empower and educate the next generation of diverse, digital talent. Seeing this young woman growing in confidence, having clear career aspirations and the academic foundation to achieve what she’s set out to do is an inspiring example of Ada’s strong social mobility focus.
“Empowering, inclusive, and encouraging”, was Jasmine’s response when we asked to describe Ada in 3 words. She also highlights how the support provided by industry volunteers during the industry projects, and through coaching sessions has helped her to learn about work-ready attributes like collaborating with new people and applying skills in a real-world context and honing her presentation and writing skills.
Jasmine is now very excited to return to WWT for the second part of her placement in November and being in the workplace has confirmed her desire to pursue a degree apprenticeship – ideally with one of Ada’s partner employers.
