“There have been a lot of inputs from my days at Ada that aided my journey. It has been a catapult in my career, and a lot of doors have opened thanks to the partners, events, and group meetings we had with industry professionals. They would give us tips and help us through building a CV and preparing for interviews, which ultimately helped in getting the internships necessary to secure that difficult first job.
When I think of memorable moments from Ada, I have to say the very first Amazon Web Services event at ExCeL stands out. That was really a highlight for me because it didn’t feel like we were lacking the soft skills necessary to interact with these people, make contacts, and find potential internships. At the end of the day, that is what it’s all about: networking and being able to keep up with professionals in the industry.
Being able to take your skill set to a level where you can approach, and be approached by, your colleagues is definitely something I didn’t think was as important as I found it to be in the corporate world, especially in tech.
The tech, the projects, and the deliverables come easily if you are able to establish a proper relationship with your team, your colleagues, and cross-functional teams around the company. That certainly aids a lot of the work and the career journey people are on.
In terms of my outlook on the future of tech careers, there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment, especially with AI, and a lot of questions around that. But one thing being a student at Ada definitely teaches you is how to be ready and flexible for emerging tech, and how to stay on top of new trends as they come in. You learn to problem-solve rather than just fixating on one specific programming language.
Since leaving, a lot of projects have come my way. It has been a few years, and I would definitely say I’ve taken a slightly different trajectory compared to many other students. That is one of the great things about Ada, it gives you the choice of whether you want to go to university or take the apprenticeship route.
One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on was my master’s thesis, which focused on Wikipedia vandalism. It gave me a really deep dive into the natural language used across all the Wikipedias in the world. You would be surprised by what that reveals in terms of emotional response and how different cultures perceive news. That was quite exciting, but again, all of that was part of a journey that started right here.
As for the network itself, my mates and I have been participating quite a bit in the networking events, and it is definitely something I am keen to do more of in the future.
