Hear from Tom Young, Senior Engineering Manager, at ClearScore about their Apprenticeship partnership with Ada.

The Ada apprentices are a fundamental part of our culture. They’ve come in and they’ve made us better as a workplace with opportunities for growing people through the early stages of their career right up until they’ve got decades of experience. And having the fresh blood, the fresh ideas come in from Ada has been fundamental to us evolving our ways of working, our thought processes, and to develop modern solutions to modern problems. They have led work as well as following. They have changed our processes as a team as well as as a company. They have come with ideas and with fresh perspective. Even just asking “Why?” sometimes is such a powerful question.

The partnership with Ada has allowed us to really grow a lot of our seniors as well. Any healthy software engineering squad needs a variety of different seniorities, a variety of different levels of engineer. Partially in order to provide those mentoring opportunities for my seniors, but partly also to provide them with the challenge and also the collaboration on solutions. One of the best things I’ve done in the last couple of years of my career has been working with Ada apprentices. Having them come through into my squad on rotation and then work with us for a period, maybe move on, maybe ask to stay for another period of time has been so fulfilling and has also allowed me as an engineering manager to grow as an educator and to grow as a mentor.
