Launchpad

The Foundation of Technical Excellence.

What is Launchpad?

Our degree apprenticeships begin with a focused five-week college-based learning block, covering the first two modules of the programme. This gives apprentices time to build new skills and relationships in a structured, low-pressure environment, away from the demands of the workplace.

Building Technical Capability

Apprentices develop core programming competency in Python, establishing the foundation for their three-year technical journey. The curriculum covers code comprehension, version control through GitHub, function development, iteration structures, and Object-Oriented Programming principles. By the end of Launchpad, apprentices are building and testing functional programmes that solve complex computational problems, applying Test-Driven Development practices to ensure code quality.

Establishing Professional Practice

Beyond technical skills, Launchpad immerses apprentices in the project management methodologies that underpin modern software development. From Agile and Scrum frameworks to Waterfall approaches, apprentices gain practical understanding of how these methodologies translate to workplace environments. Training extends to user experience principles, interface design, stakeholder communication, and presentation skills that enable effective collaboration across technical and non-technical teams.

Industry Connection

Throughout Launchpad, apprentices engage directly with industry professionals and real-world challenges. Guest speakers from leading organisations share insights into workplace practices and career progression. Apprentices work on authentic project briefs that apply Software Development Life Cycle principles to genuine business problems, learning to gather requirements, engage stakeholders, and present technical solutions to diverse audiences.

Structure

The five-week Launchpad includes two foundational modules: System Development Life Cycle and Project Management (SDLC) and Programming. SDLC builds teamwork and solution delivery skills – core to delivering any tech project. Programming develops problem-solving and computational thinking – vital for software engineers and valuable across all tech roles.

We structure the block with SDLC in weeks 1 and 5, and Programming in the middle three weeks, like a “Programming sandwich.” This approach reinforces learning, builds confidence, and ensures apprentices return to work ready to apply what they’ve learned.

Delivering Workforce-Ready Talent

Launchpad ensures apprentices arrive at your organisation with standardised foundational competencies whilst remaining ready to absorb your specific technical stack and development practices. They understand version control systems, testing practices that support code quality, and the business context in which technical decisions operate. This combination of prepared capability and continued learning capacity represents the value of the apprenticeship model.

When apprentices transition to employer placements, they bring not just technical skills, but an understanding of professional practice, industry standards, and the collaborative approaches that drive successful software development.
