Social Mobility Day reminds us that talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t.
The numbers from last year’s Tech Talent Charter report tell a stark story: only 9% of UK tech employees come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. In an industry crying out for diverse talent and fresh perspectives, we’re missing out on 91% of the population’s potential. This isn’t just about fairness, it’s about business sense. Companies with diverse teams outperform their peers, yet many struggle to translate good intentions into meaningful action.
The question isn’t whether change is needed. It’s how we can make it happen.
At Ada, our apprentices prove what’s possible when barriers are removed, 46% come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, bringing the socially mobile perspectives that drive innovation.
To business leaders: Social Mobility Day is more than awareness, it’s a call to action. The industry needs your commitment to creating genuine pathways for underrepresented talent.
Thank you to all of our employer partners and apprentices who help make change possible. Here’s to continuing the work, together.
