To get everyone moving, we jumped into a lively game of “People Bingo.” This fast-paced, collaborative challenge required students to ask one another questions to find matches on their bingo cards, only ending when someone shouted “BINGO!” It proved to be the perfect way to find common ground and new friendships.
The energy stayed high as we moved into a technical revision challenge led by Tina, Director of Quality and Curriculum to sharpen those core skills. Since Day 1 coincided with Pancake Day, we refueled with pancakes during the break, where a student-led game of “Imposter” quickly became a firm favorite for the rest of the week.
The rest of the day was dedicated to GCSE Computer Science theory revision and a high-intensity afternoon of understanding and coding Bubble sort (a sorting algorithm that even Barack Obama knows).
Day 2 was all about the fundamentals, with sessions on Computer Science revision revising, Systems software and Operating Systems. Alicia led a brilliant session on mastering a Q&A with a tech professional, giving everyone the tools to communicate their ideas with confidence. Then we had Liam Rushton from PA Consulting talk to the students about his journey into technology and consulting.
By Day 3, we tackled computer networks, connections, and protocols. We took a break from the revision for a comprehension session focused on the current Work From Home vs. Return to Office debate. Seeing the students go head-to-head, backing up their arguments with evidence from the text, in a debate was great to see! In the afternoon we continued to look at the Ethical, Legal and Environmental implications of technology and computing learning about the rare earth materials that go into making our smartphones and discussing the legal and ethical implications of facial recognition software in public places.
We finished with a discussion of exam tactics, followed by a celebratory certificate ceremony to recognise the dedication shown by the students during their half term. What a great week thanks to everyone involved for making it such a success.
